Like an enraged toddler breaking his toys, Trump is breaking what America’s achieved over two centuries. He suffers from child-like rage, the inability to feel empathy, guilt or remorse, and a blind eye to the consequences.
Trump has:
- Coopted the rolls that the Constitution gave to the Supreme Court and Congress destroying Constitution’s system of checks and balances. His spineless Congressional Republicans handed him control of Congress. And Trump’s Supreme Court majority that has handed him freedom to violate the Constitution by staying multiple injunctions against Trump’s unconstitutional executive orders. The Trump-favoring majority also gave him full control over the policies that Congress wanted the 400 federal agencies it created to decide by letting him fire their employees and replace them with whomever he wants, in clear violation of the legislation creating those agencies.
- Ravaged America’s safety nets by cutting billions of dollars from Medicaid and Medicare to pay for his obscene tax cuts for the wealthy. The cuts will eliminate 11.8 million people from Medicaid, in other words, transferring dollars from middle and low income earners to American oligarchs. But Trump’s sinister bill makes sure the loss won’t be felt until after the primaries, while the tax cuts will start this year.
- Dismantled essential federal agencies to replace the revenues lost by his tax cuts. They include the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs and, tragically, emergency rescue agencies, such as FEMA, which could have saved most – maybe all – of the 120 people killed in Kerr County – all in the face of warnings that the FEMA was unprepared for disasters from the mass firings of qualified employees.
Why is Trump destroying the pillars of America’s democracy? It’s because deliberate destruction of what others have built creates feelings of control and power.
It’s unsettling that Vladimir Putin sees that Trump’s made America vulnerable by alienating its allies and taking a wrecking ball to America’s government. Too bad American voters don’t see it and Republicans have decided to tolerate it.
